Mentoring and supporting young golf professionals is essential to the long-term health of the golf industry. Through mentorship, we can pass along not only on-the-job knowledge, but also the values, leadership skills, and professionalism required to succeed in our industry. Guidance and encouragement help young professionals build confidence, navigate challenges, and develop a sense of direction as they progress in their careers. By investing time in their growth and preparation, mentors help ensure the next generation is well-equipped to uphold the traditions of the game while continuing to evolve the industry for the future.
At Medinah I was responsible for the scheduling and daily oversight of 45 staff members during peak season, including golf shop staff, starters & rangers, and assistant golf professionals. This required me to quickly learn schedule management, how to have constant and constructive communication with fellow staff, adaptability, and how to delegate tasks among the staff. I was also involved in the hiring process of PGA interns and associates. As a former intern myself I know how important internships are and felt like I was able to connect with these interns having been in their shoes before. The addition of housing at Eaglewood Resort, which was adjacent to Medinah, allowed for us to have a more appealing Internship Program. In the 2022 season, we hired more than 25 interns and associates, including multiple international interns.
Throughout my time at Medinah I had the privilege to hire and work with over 60 different interns and associates. Many of them have moved on to other top clubs around the country like Los Angeles Country Club, The Honors Course, The Country Club, and many others. This program allowed for not only me, but the interns and fellow golf professionals to grow a strong national and international network with those who are the future leaders our industry.
While the staffing demands at Bob O'Link are not nearly the same as they were at Medinah, I have been able to help build a stronger internship program, consistently hiring 2-3 interns each season. I have been able to use the skills I acquired at Medinah to improve the experience and learning for interns at Bob O'Link. We are able to give them the opportunity to learn as much as possible in all aspects of the golf operation and have helped them move on to other intern and assistant golf professional roles.
